Will she succumb to temptation? Will she abandon whatever sliver of hope remains for her and Mark Darcy? Far be it for me to spoil the ending, but suffice it to say, it left me in tears.
Darcy, Cleaver's claims of change combined with his winning charm begin to win Ms. Now that Bridget has severed her relationship with Mr. As I am sure you can recall (from the mandatory weekly screenings), in the previous film Cleaver acted the perfect gentleman, but was revealed to be the exact opposite. As fate may have it, Bridget ends up meeting up with the charming but manipulative Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) for a job assignment in, of all places, Thailand. I am not ashamed to admit that I honestly wondered if they would ever get back together, so heated and riveting was their argument. After one particularly nasty fight, Bridget and Mark Darcy split up and decide to go their separate ways. Jones' life is nothing if not that of a trailblazer. While I'd guess that there are two or three relationships out there that have problems, it is only in a film of this caliber that such murky moral waters could be tread. Yes, the unthinkable does cross Bridget's mind: what if her true love is not being as faithful to her as we all dreamed he was? Furthermore, viewers are nudged into this direction of doubt even more when we see that the once-smitten couple do not get along as well as they did when they first met. Then again, it certainly doesn't help when that pesky, yet oh-so adorable Mark Darcy seems to fancy another woman.
I know what you must be thinking, for the same thought crossed my mind as well: how could there be anything but perfect joy between Bridget (Renee Zellweger) and her prince charming, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth)? Well, gentle readers, while our lives may be practically perfect in every way, Bridget can't seem to get through a single day without messing up one thing or another. It is a credit to the storytellers that they managed to tackle this idea into the film while at the same time juggling other perception-altering challenges such as lighting and camera-placement. oh, I'll just go out and say it: there is conflict. how best to put this without losing the surprise. However, things aren't as peachy-keen as you might first suspect. After all, who needs depth when a well-placed sex joke will do?Īs the film begins we join our luminous heroine in all of her glory, wobbly bits and all. No where are you left to wonder, "How will these choices affect the characters souls?" Nay, there is none of that meaningless gray area mumbo-jumbo.
However, unlike the Coppola film, this movie has no boring parts. Much like another highly praised sequel, The Godfather, Part II, this film expands upon the story that was begun in the first chapter. And by the Great Maker I promise you, faithful reader, I gave it my all. After a careful assessment of some of my better work, primarily my Raise Your Voice and The Princess Diaries 2 pieces, the editors saw fit to hand me this blessing. When the smoke finally cleared, I was one of the few left standing. Words (and staplers) were thrown, insults were made (and retracted), and a full-blown blood feud was initiated (twice). The IGN brass argued long into the night over who should get the honor of this review. I won't lie to you, several meetings were held. But we draw the line when it comes to the Bridget Jones franchise. Granted, there are certain cases, Star Wars and The Matrix Trilogy for example, where we know that there isn't that much of an audience so we rush it out the door.
We apologize that we couldn't get this out to you sooner, however, as I am sure you can understand, we refuse to let anything go until it's perfect. Yes, the review you have all been waiting for has finally arrived. There is no longer any need to hold your collective breath. Faithful readers, you can finally exhale.
